How to Grow Sunchokes

How to grow sunchokes? Here are some tips:

  • Choose a sunny location  · Plant sunchokes in loose, well- drained soil
  • Plant sunchokes in a dedicated bed
  • Sunchokes have a tendency to quickly spread and take over a flower bed or vegetable garden, so it’s best to plant sunchokes in their own exclusive bed.  ·
  • Space sunchoke tubers 12 to 18 inches apart  ·
  • Plant tubers 4-6 inches deep. Spread a one-inch layer of mulch over the topsoil
  • Sunchokes are hardy in USDA zones 3 to 9, meaning they can tolerate a range of temperatures, from cold winters to warm summers.
  • Sunchokes prefer a pH of around 6.5 to 7.
  •  Plant immediately after arrival for best results. In zones 3–9, spring and early fall are ideal times to plant, but summer planting is also possible if you water regularly. Don’t wait too long—tubers may dry out or sprout in storage. In warmer climates, you can plant them in early fall for a spring harvest.
  • It is normal if you find some small black spots on the sunchokes.  ·
  •  Any small piece of tuber you leave in your garden after the harvest will grow into another sunchoke plant and produce new tubers the following year.
