Details

Daikon is a lengthy, white root vegetable commonly found in East and South Asian countries. Resembling an oversized carrot, it falls under the radish family. It goes by various names like white radish, winter radish, Oriental radish, and long white radish. In Cantonese and Malaysian cuisine, it's known as lobak or lo pak, which are pronunciations of the general Chinese term for "radish" or "carrot". Daikon is valued for its nutritional content, crunchy texture, and refreshing taste. Its flavor and texture can vary depending on the cooking method.

To grow daikon radish, sow the seeds about ¼-½ inch (1cm) deep and 1 inch (2.5 cm) apart in rows spaced 12-18 inches (30-45cm) apart. These radishes can withstand frost and thrive when planted in late summer, benefiting from warm soil for germination and cooler temperatures as they mature. It's advisable to avoid planting during the hottest days of summer. Daikon radishes grow best in temperatures ranging from 50-65°F (10-18°C). They prefer full sun to partial shade, with sunny yet cool conditions being optimal for their growth.
